The Annual Convocation of Provincial Grand Chapter took place on the 24th May 2011 in the Grand Temple of Freemasons’ Hall in London.
A team of willing volunteers gathered at Oakfield Road early that morning to load all the regalia and documentation onto the coach to take them to Great Queen Street. After unloading the coach everyone set about preparing the changing rooms and the Temple for the arrival of the Companions.
From 1 pm Companions of the Province and their guests started gathering in the Grand Temple. Just after 3pm the Companions were called to order to receive distinguished guests, including the Grand Superintendents and Principals of neighbouring Provinces resplendent in their chains of office; along with senior members of other Masonic Orders entering in procession accompanied by an organ voluntary. Finally, the entire Convocation was called to order by E.Comp. Mark Winchester the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies to receive the Provincial Officers of the year accompanying the ME Grand Superintendent, the Deputy Grand Superintendent and the Provincial Grand Principals, led by the Provincial Grand Sword Bearer and followed by the Provincial Grand Standard Bearers.
Following a rousing opening hymn, Provincial Grand Chapter was opened in due form by the Provincial Grand Principals who ascended the dais and took their seats, followed by the acting Officers of the year. The business of Provincial Grand Chapter commenced with the ME Grand Superintendent individually welcoming the many representatives of other Provinces and Masonic Orders.
During the Convocation the ME Grand Superintendent was pleased to re-appoint E.Comp. Dr Roger J Howland as the Deputy Grand Superintendent. E.Comp. Richard J Wileman, Second Provincial Grand Principal designate, was then escorted into Provincial Grand Chapter, obligated, invested and proclaimed by the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies. The retiring Second Provincial Grand Principal, E.Comp. David F R Lester was thanked by the ME Grand Superintendent for his loyal service and was presented with the collarette and jewel of a Past Second Provincial Grand Principal. The ME Grand Superintendent then re-appointed E.Comp. Derek A Harrington as Third Provincial Grand Principal.
A total of 83 promotions within Provincial Grand Rank were announced, the recipients mounting the dais to be congratulated by the ME Grand Superintendent who also invested and congratulated 46 Companions receiving first appointments in Provincial Grand Rank.
Two senior Companions of the Province, E Comps Ernie Scarsbrook, PPGSN and Dennis Foddy, PPGSN were then escorted to the ME Grand Superintendent to receive Certificates for Distinguished Service to the Province. Both Companions were greeted by the assembled Convocation with acclaim after which the ME Grand Superintendent addressed the Convocation.
The Convocation was then called to order and closed in due form with a closing hymn. The Provincial Officers and Principals then left the Temple in procession to the echoing strains of a recessional fanfare by the Provincial Grand Organist.
Following the Convocation, some 300 Companions dined in peace and harmony in the Grand Connaught Rooms where the customary Loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured.
The dinner ended with the ME Grand Superintendent drawing the five prize-winning tickets, £1,000, £500, £200, £125 and £50, for the 500 Club draw.
